Barry and Felicia,

You will probably get as many different definitions as you get responses.
We all have a slightly different perspective.

For me the mission is a very clear statement of my department's job. My
mission is to select suppliers to manufacture the products that we sell in
our catalogs.

The vision is very important in that its purpose is to describe -- in
terms that lend themselves to useable assessment -- the achievements of
the department at some time in the future, like 3 or 5 years. The purpose
of the vision is to create a tension between the current state and the
goal.
