Communities of Practice workshop LO27185 -starts October 15

From: John D. Smith (smithjd@teleport.com)
Date: 08/29/01

Etienne Wenger and I are offering our online workshop on Communities of
Practice the weeks of October 15th, 29th and November 12th.

This online workshop examines what communities of practice are, why they
are important to organizations, how to develop, nurture, and leverage
them, and how to build a knowledge strategy around them. Because the
workshop is presented online, it also provides a rich environment in which
to consider what online environments can offer as resources for
communities of practice. As you may know, the workshop continues to
evolve each time it is presented. Recently I've gathered some reflections
on the workshop and how it's evolved over time in a paper at:
http://www.teleport.com/~smithjd/CPW_story (may be way more than you want
to know, but it actually is only the tip of the iceberg).

Schedule: The workshop is held in three separate weeks, stretching over a
five-week period, in a one-week-on, one-week-off cycle.

Participants: The workshop participants come from many different
industries, countries, organizational settings, and practices. As it
simulates participation in an active community of practice but compresses
the experience into a short period of time, the workshop can take around 2
hours a day (or more, in some cases). The workshop is typically both
exhilarating and exhausting.

Topics: The workshop explores a broad range of topics, including:

* The composition and life cycle of communities of practice

* The function of communities of practice in the development and
transmission of knowledge, both from a theory and a practice
perspective

* Techniques for stimulating, connecting and assessing communities

* Successful community strategies at leading companies, including
guest speakers who are pioneers who share their experience and
understanding

Tuition: Tuition for this workshop is $695. To encourage group learning, a
discount is available when 3 or more people from the same organization
have taken the workshop.
