Etienne Wenger and I are offering our online workshop on Communities of
Practice running Monday, January 28 through Friday, March 1, 2002.
This online workshop examines what communities of practice are, why they
are important, how to develop, nurture, and leverage them, and how to
build a knowledge strategy around them.
This workshop is not your typical computer-based training. It is a
participant-driven, interactive, and experiential learning space. Be ready
to be engaged personally in an actual experience of what the workshop is
about.
Schedule: The workshop is held in three separate weeks, stretching over a
five-week period, in a one-week-on, one-week-off cycle.
Time commitment: Apart from weekly teleconferences, the workshop is
asynchronous, which means that you can participate on your own schedule.
As we simulate participation in an active community of practice but
compress the experience into a short period of time, you should plan to
spend about 2 hours a day in the workshop space during the three active
weeks. The workshop is typically both exhilarating and intense.
Participants: The workshop participants come from many different
industries, countries, organizational settings, and practices. Because the
workshop evolves every time, we encourage alumni to participate again.
Topics: The workshop explores a broad range of topics, including:
* The definition, dynamics, and life cycle of communities of practice
* The art of community development as well as typical roles
* The function of communities of practice in the development and
transmission of knowledge
* Issues of management and organizational design associated with
cultivating communities
* Guest speakers from leading companies will also discuss their
experience in driving a community-based knowledge strategy
Because the workshop is held online, it also provides a rich environment
in which to explore technology-related issues such as designing for
sociability and knowledge exchange.
Tuition: Tuition for this workshop is $695. To encourage group learning, a
discount is available when 3 or more people from the same organization
have taken the workshop.
