Block-Stewardship LO27629

Actually, a great deal of contemporary discussion of organization
attributes are part of the larger framework of which Block's Stewardship
is a part. These discussions encompass everything from what constitutes
effective leadership to rention to customer service. In PeaceHealth (a
health care corporation) we have identified the construct encompassed by
all of this as Healing and Compassionate Care. But it is not just about
patient care. It is about how an effective organization works and lives,
regardless of their services or products. Our approach has been to build a
solid conceptualization that includes Block, Posner, Patient-Centered
Care, Senge and others and then construct a comprehensive scientific
measurement system to determine where we stand, identify what needs work
and monitor our improvement. The basic ideas involved in this framework
(which has yet to be made explicit in the literature) is that
organizational activities are dependent upon the culture of the
organization. This culture must be one that facilitates staff involvement
(not just showing up for work) in the vision (high productivity of high
quality at the lowest cost). Involvement means personal, to the core of
being involvement. That come about by providing an environment that meets
basic human needs (meaning - Block Spirituality-, intrinsic reward,
purpose, empowerment, freedom to use unique personal skills and abilities
to contribute, being treated with dignity and respect as a valued human
being, true caring for one another among all members of the organization,
opportunity to grow and develop).
