today I wanted to cry LO29043

Replying to Andrew in LO29016 --

Andrew, citing Mike Jay:

Andrew, commenting/querying:

> Can anyone see the/a gap?

I don't know that I see "the" gap you do and I see more than "a" gap.

Gap 1: Although qualified by Mike, there is an implied gap between the
percentage of population in "post conventional" development and the
percentage that should be there. At least, that's the way I read it.
This "gap," however, hangs on the application of the classification
scheme/label/criteria summed up as "post conventional." Not sure what's
behind that. See Gap 2.

Gap 2: For as long as I've been hanging around the periphery of the
behavioral/social/organizational sciences, their reputation for
first-rate, solid, scientific research has been abysmal. As I might have
said a few years ago, "It sucks!" Gap 2, then, is using a questionable
benchmark for benchmarking purposes. It is a prime example of what I call
"the basic binary split" i.e., of taking an initial step that defines the
universe in two parts (this and not this or, in this case, "post
conventional" and not post conventional).

Gap 3: Andrew goes "fishing," i.e., asks about the "gap" seen by others
but shares not the one(s) he sees. This, of course, is my gap, i.e., a
discrepancy between what I perceive and what I believe. Ah yes,
perceptions and belief systems, the very stuff out of which we fashion
ideas, dreams, goals and objectives, requirements, learning organizations
and countless other artifacts of our intelligence and our intelligence
(and, no, LOers, that's not the redundancy it might appear at first
glance). But, quick to learn, I hope, I'll borrow a page from Andrew's
book and ask, Does anyone see the/a gap? (Actually, Andrew asked if
anyone "Can" see the/a gap and that's a different question from "Does"
anyone see the/a gap?)

Gap 4: Fred rises to the bait, despite repeated admonitions to self to not
do so. The discrepancy here is between the way Fred tells himself he
should behave and the way he actually behaves. Hmm. If, as I believe, we
act to control what we perceive, there's no gap here at all -- except
between my espoused standards and my enacted standards. Oh well...that'll
require some work.
