Columbia LO29890

Replying to LO29879 --

I was really sad to hear of the loss of the Columbia crew. For any of us
undertaking risky business, we are always aware of the worst case
scenario. In the case of a space shuttle, what staggers me is the huge
number of ways things can go wrong. I believe one of the earlier vehicles
burnt on the launch pad, and the technicians realised that they had lost
control of the design - we in Australia became aware of a new science
called 'configuration management'. Seems we always learn the hard way,
however at least NASA and the shuttle crews 'had a go'.

Good luck to all future crews, may they long keep trying!

Best Regards,
Alan Cotterell

[Host's Note: The fire on the launch pad was an Apollo spacecraft in the
60's. ..Rick]
