Replying to LO30144 --
I have my doublts as to the validity of the approach the following passage
indicates:
"We abolish manuals, procedures and policies so that people are free to
improvise, to soar and collect moments of happiness that constitute
genuine success. To keep turnover low we put mechanisms in place to remind
employees 'make sure that you are where you want to be, and make sure this
is what you want to do.' We'll bend over backwards to find what they
want."
This ideology leads to crisis management. It is far better to operate
with a management system which calls up national standards in simple
policy statements, to deal with operational risk - quality, safety,
environment, security.
I really wonder about Semco's lassez faire approach to management. I
suggest it's a bit like a monkey typing on a typewriter - eventually he
will type a passage from Shakespeare.
