You might be interested in Michael Gerber's The E-Myth. I recently read
the first edition (I'm told the second edition is significantly changed,
so I don't know if he goes into it the same way there), and he includes a
good description of how a new-hire orientation program could (he'd
probably be more prescriptive and say "should") fit into the overall
business approach a company has.

Good luck! I'd also be interested in hearing from people who have read
that book and have comments.
