Dear Rick, Dear Reader,

Although i agree with you - virusses make a mess of the internet, and
i've recieved my share of infected mails - there are some lessons
(System Archetypes) here:

 - every reproductive being, system, machine or programm is vulnerable
to destructive "code"; it somehow comes with the deal: if you want
reproduction, you'll have to have deproduction (an alternative word
for de-struction, because most clever virusses will try to keep their
host intact). Or perhaps in-production, ineffective production. A kind
of Limit To Growth. As you're facilitating a successful e-mail list,
you're being limitted by these virusses. And - lets be honest - aren't
we trying to sneak these LO-concepts into large organizations, like a
virus? What can we learn from these viral codes?

 - lack of diversity enhances the effect of desproductive code: the
fact that these virusses can become so out of control has also to do
with the omnipresent Windows software. I - as you know - am still
using Netscape most of the time. Success To The Successful will
ultimately meet its boundaries. I can see this also in the spreading
of influenza virusses in a number of populations.

 - virusses trigger creativity: some scientists say that our two
different sexes emerged as a response to viral or bacterial
infections. We're trying to outsmart the things that try to outsmart
us. Thereby we're complicating the entire system and that will
ultimately lead to transformation. The systems archetype might be: "My
Solution Is Your Problem" -Unintentional Advisaries Revisited or
Hostile Co-operators.

 - Tragedy Of The Commons, off course: because this world wide web is
almost "for free", we'll let our sheep - e-mails - roam freely, nobody
takes care of the meadows. There is no web-police - or most of the
times, there isn't - and i think that this kind of freedom comes with
this type of boredom.

Can you spot more LO-lessons here?

Kindf regards,

Jan
