CONFERENCE ON QUALITY AND MANAGEMENT: QUALITY NOW AND DIRECTIONS FOR THE
21ST CENTURY

The Quality and Management Conference is sponsored by the Academy of
Management, the ASU College of Business, and the ASU Department of
Management, and is to be held February 12-14, l998, in Tempe, AZ. The
overall conference theme reflects the importance of people and processes
in realizing organizational quality goals. Sessions will feature invited
speaker on various themes, each followed by competitive paper
presentations. The themes and invited speakers include: Assessment of
Quality Efforts (Tom Ruddy, Xerox); Culture (Jan Beyer); Human Resource
Management (Dianna Stone); Operations Management and Quality (Roger
Schroeder); Organizational Change (Ed Lawler); Quality in New Product
Development (Barb Flynn); Service Quality (Dick Chase); Strategy (Mike
Hitt). Papers are also invited on the topic of future directions of
quality concepts and practices. Discussion facilitators will include
Jerry Kehoe (AT&T) and other practitioners. You are invited to submit a
full paper or abstract of an original work that addresses one of the above
themes. Each submission should include: title page (separate) with name,
affiliation, telephone, fax, and e-mail information for each author and
the theme for which the paper is being submitted. While complete papers
(that follow the style guidelines of the Academy of Management Journal)
can be submitted, at a minimum, an abstract of two pages is required.
Conceptual papers are acceptable, but empirical works are encouraged.
Practitioner submissions are also encouraged and might focus on the state
of quality efforts within organizations or consider the future direction
of quality concepts and practices in organizations. The conference will
include presentation of awards for the best paper in each theme. Paper
submissions will also be considered for publication in the Journal of
Quality Management. Send four copies of your paper/abstract by September
5, l997 to Robert L. Cardy, Department of Management, College of Business,
