Hi Andrew --

LMA has taught "influence" for over 20 years. We were among the pioneers
so to speak -- in investigating and training people in this area. In the
begining the courses focused very much on just the interpersonal skills --
persuasion, visioning, listening, etc. This involved having people notice
their body language and tone of voice. One of the things, in my own 10+
years of working with people in this area is that you do have to know what
you want. Sounds simple I realize but many people get into difficult
situations and don't know how to think. People have life changing
experiences because they begin to realize how much their own thought
process and attitudes affect how they interact with others.

We then developed another version fo the program to include what we call
Orgainzational Street Smarts and Leading Yourself. So now we work with
people on understanding the politics in a positive way -- that working
life is made up of interactions and "commitiments" as the article on
Fernando Flores pointed out. Or as the book you are asking about also
refers to -- building relationships and alliances. But one piece we found
others to also be telling us was important was how to handle their own
mindset. So we also work with people on Leading Yourself skills. We all
shoot ourselves in the foot in different situations and are not as
effective. So how do you handle it when your mind and feelings are doing
a nose dive on you and you have to stay engaged?

My work encourages people to choose instead of reacting -- or at least
choose after reacting initially. The most powerful, influential, and
succeessful people ( I define successful as other people around them still
like them) are flexible in approach, build relationships based on trust,
have a strong vision or belief in what they are doing, have energy and
endurance, and they care.... to name a few of the characterisitcs.
