Replying to LO14081 --

Although we haven't officially begun our chapter-by-chapter discussion of
Punished by Rewards, I sent Jan Lelie's message on cooperation and
competition to Alfie Kohn and he sent back the following reply:

>Thanks for the posting. It seems to be a dressed-up version of the old
>claim that we need SOME competition along with cooperation, a claim
>premised on the belief that competition is necessary for innovation and
>enjoyment. The "some of both" argument seems moderate and reasonable, but
>may well rest on dubious assumptions. Also, the argument ignores the
>possibility of independent work or learning; to argue for the abolition of
>competition is not always or necessarily to argue for cooperation in all
>endeavors.

>Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing what your group has to say about
>PBR.

> -- Alfie Kohn

I plan to allow another two weeks for you all to read Kohn's book and we'll
begin the discussion around July 15.

Best regards,

Roxanne
