Ray Harrell writes:

I can imagine your asking why they didn't just teach them piano. Because
the NYCity school's cutbacks in the arts doesn't allow people studying
Math to study piano as a cure for Math phobia, of course. It has to be a
Math course to fix a Math problem.

I usually watch the TODAY show while getting ready for work. There was a
piece not to long ago about the impact of music on a child's math skills.
The piece made a pitch for retaining music programs in elementary schools.

A product of schools in the NE, I started playing an instrument in 3rd
grade. I begin college as a music major. What caused me to drop it was
the mathematical difficult involved in music theory combined with a desire
to eat.

I hope that our school systems recognize the value of music before it is
too late.
