Another reply to LO14437 regarding matrix organizations--

When I worked with a group of middle managers in a defense organization,
we were trying to determine how to operate effectively in a matrix
organization. I used Matrix by Davis and Lawrence from the Addison-Wesley
OD series to understand and explain the matrix operation.

Our cross-functional team also used Getting Things Done when You are NOT
in Charge by Geoffrey Bellman to help us define and establish operating
principles. This source helped the group to re-define how they thought of
leadership and influence. It also led us to focus on the leadership's
cross-functional behavior, define expectations for themselves, and from
there develop expectations for the full organization.
