In my work, I find it helpful to "structural observations" as those which
make a cause and effect linkage.

For example, I think we are talking structurally when we say, "The high
tax rates are causing business to make less investment," or "When you
yell at me, this leads me to yell back at you."

I believe that making structural observations (and hypotheses) is at the
heart of systems thinking.

I published an article on "How to Find Structure" in _The Systems
