One of the visual images described in The Fifth Discipline is the story of
the five blind men and the elephant. As a grass roots practitioner and
implementer of the LO disciplines, this story along with the elephant
picture have been valuable in helping others to see problems from a
systems view. The image is another good example of a "picture being worth
a thousand words", especially when the words are attempting to explain
systems thinking.

Perhaps others have had similar experiences or would like to try using the
elephant story for a current problem in your organization. How about we
share them with everyone on the list. David Packer at GKA, Inc has
graciously provided access to the elephant cartoon image and Rick has
placed it on the LO web site.

When you look at this cartoon, what "Elephant Stories" come to mind? How
could you use the image to start a conversation on a problem in your
organization ? Or, how have you already done so ?

Suggest the application ideas and stories be identified by the title
"_______ Elephant", filling in the blank with a term that represents the
content of your idea or story. That way we can dialogue on specific
elephant stories without mixing them up with others.

A story on the Waste Elephant follows. Thank you Rick and David for your
collaboration on this post.
