Hi there...

I'm rejoining the list after several months' absence.

I note in the first digest I received that there is an ongoing discussion
about knowledge workers. That's an area where I consider myself qualified
to speak out and so I'll probably chime in before too long.

Currently, I'm employed as head of strategic planning and management
services for Educational Testing Service (ETS), home to the SAT, GRE,
GMAT, and lots of other tests known by their initials. I've been with ETS
for almost 8 years. Before joining ETS I was an exec with a financial
services company; before that, I was an independent management consultant
for about a dozen years; and, before that, I spent 20 years in the United
States Navy (retired in 1974 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer). My
specialty in the Navy was weapons systems, and I know a little bit about
servomechanisms, control loops, and "dynamic" problems (e.g., how to hit a
moving target). I was also trained as a classroom instructor, a
programmed instruction writer, an instructional systems developer, and an
internal organization development (OD) consultant. That adds up to
fancying that I know a little bit about "hard" and "soft" systems,
including the processes of change, learning, and control.

In addition to my work at ETS, I also do a little consulting on the side.
(Once a consultant, always a consultant.)

Regards,

Fred Nickols
