Perhaps you've stumbled on a universal truth, here, Jan. I've experienced
similar phenomenon. It seems that when I advocate or evangelize, I
generate a binary response (I get switched off--or the other person gets
switched on). We are disengaged or else we are engaged in an argument, or
dialectic, which rarely includes listening to one another. When I engage
a person in a listening environment, full of silent reflection and the
sense of tangible relationships, we are more likely to agree on principles
and values. Words become less important than the sense of what they
symbolize.

I've found that I prefer the latter experience to the former--no longer
enjoying the joy of the hunt (arguing can be such a predatory
experience!). Anyway, I enjoyed hearing what you had to say--and I think
we are experiencing something very much the same.
