Replying to LO17597 --

Last night, my wife and I attended a lecture by the noted and very
controversial teacher and writer, Herbert Kohl. He's on the circuit
promoting his most recent book, _The Discipline of Hope_.

In his talk, he made a point of saying that he was against testing, in
general, and almost violently opposed to standardized testing, in
particular.

However, he admits that testing is a fact of modern life and that students
need to learn how to deal with them. So, he feels that it is essential
that schools teach how to succeed at taking tests, that students learn
test-taking strategies and learn to "game" the tests, as appropriate.

And, having done that, the students can get on with their education.
