ARE WE IN A NEW ERA ECONOMY?

Roger Bootle

(Chief Economist for HSBC Holdings and former
economic adviser to the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer)

23 April 1998 at 6pm

in the Great Room, Royal Society of Arts,
8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ

(Underground: Charing Cross or Embankment)

The ticket price of UKP 75 includes a free copy of Roger Bootle's
book `The Death of Inflation'.

Three years ago Roger Bootle wrote a book provocatively titled
`The Death of Inflation'. At the Tomorrow's Company Forum
at the RSA on 23 April, Roger intends to go further. He
believes that the complex chemistry produced by globalisation,
organisational change and technology is permanently altering the
nature of the competitive environment that tomorrow's company
faces. The results are dramatic for:

- Economists, who will have to redefine and steepen the
aggregate supply curve. In layman's terms, the assumed
limits of an economy's ability to produce more output
have been removed.

- Employment experts, who are used to a trade-off between
inflation and unemployment which may no longer exist.

- Business planners and forecasters, who may have to get
used to very different and much more ambitious growth
rates.

- Investment analysts and fund managers, whose
assumptions about the economic cycle must be adapted to
these new conditions.

`At the end of the eighteenth century', he writes, `you can
imagine the bemusement of experts who had been brought up with
the thinking of the agricultural age. I sense that we will suffer
from a similar bemusement unless and until we understand the
historical context we now live in'.

Founded in 1996 following the RSA's Tomorrow's Company Inquiry,
the Centre for Tomorrow's Company is a registered charity. The
Centre is a catalyst and think-tank whose aim is to inspire and
enable UK businesses to take an inclusive approach, defining
success in relation to all the stakeholders involved with the
business - customers, employees, suppliers, investors, the local
community and society at large. Such an approach puts people and
all their relationships at the heart of the successful business.
This sounds deceptively simple: in practice, it is a recipe for a
never-ending search for improvement.
