Replying to LO17989 --

You know, I was speaking to a friend who is a bicycling enthusiast. He
rides mostly alone because of scheduling conflicts, but he recently rode
with a group of friends on a Saturday. Afterward, he said, "you know, you
can TELL yourself you are pushing yourself to the max when you are riding
alone, but when you ride with others, that is when you find out what your
max really is."

Interesting comment re competition.

If I can offer a bit of analysis, I think he was saying that when there is
no competitive data, you don't actually have any idea how well you are
performing. It is then fairly easy to mislead yourself. At the risk of
reopening another can of worms, this connects nicely in my mind to the
thread on "Ranking".
