LO'ers,

In yesterday's Washington Post (3 Sept., pg D4) there was an article on
teenagers and school. In its discussion of what parents see as needed for
a successful school year (learning as the student's job) and what teens
see (social world) it made an excellent point:

Number 1 of 7 top things a parent can do to make this a successful school
year:

"Create an environment at home that models a love of learning. How often
have your children seen you reading? Heard you talking about something
you have learned? Do you discuss ideas and issues with them? While these
are things to have started from Day One with your child, you can still
implement them in your home now."

Number 3 is:

"This one is so simple yet so profound. Ask your children their opinions
on important issues of the day. You may be surprised to find out what
kind of brains they have in there. "

These struck me as pretty good advice for dealing with the people one
works with in an organization as well -- and as quite often said but not
done.
