Creating a meaningful organization LO19264

Hello, everyone.

I've been glued to my email lately with all this great conversation on
meaningful organizations. Beginning in early 1997, I conducted a yearlong
series of focus groups and interviews with people from all walks of work
life to find out how they find meaning in their work and their workplaces.
These were rich conversations indeed -- interesting, amazing, depressing,
surprising, inspiring. As we well know, there's nothing subtle about our
experiences at work.

Anyway, I went on to create a web site about all this. It's at..

As you might expect from such a complex topic, this site offers no quick
fixes or easy formulas. It does, however, provide rich research findings,
assessment tools, a huge collection of anecdotes, book excerpts, online
chat opportunities, and some comic relief -- all related to the concept of
meaningful organizations. It certainly adds to the conversation that's
unfolding among LO subscribers.

There's so much that can be said about meaning in the workplace, it's
tough to focus on one theme. But one that does seem to stand out is that
"meaningful work" and "meaningful workplace" are defined in vastly
different ways from person to person. In fact, following all the focus
groups and interviews, I found 22 different sources of meaning. Some of
these sources are what you'd expect, and these have been getting plenty of
attention -- but others have been profoundly neglected over the years, and
these offer an opportunity for leaps to new levels of individual and
collective fulfillment.
