How so? What other mechanism would account for examples of collaboration
in nature?

If collaboration pays off (i.e., is adaptive), then it can evolve through
natural selection.

[Host's Note: the issue I sensed in Nick's comment is whether
collaboration can persist for the long haul in nature... Nick doesn't
exactly say it, but I think his msg implies that it's only a temporary
phenomenon until natural selection finishes it's job. ...Rick]
