Replying to LO19447 --

Hi, I have been a passive reader for the past couple of months since I
have been subscribing to this wonderful learning experience. I thought it
was abouttime that I too participated. My name is Srinivas Krishna
('Srini') and I consult with Arthur Andersen Business Consulting in
Madras, India.

I am new to this discussion, so please pardon me if I am repeating issues
already discussed. I have a few thoughts ('more questions') on the issue
of professional development. Does professional development refer to
developing technical skills in professionals (ie making better
salespersons by enhancing selling skills etc). The current trend in
several organisations is to develop 'soft skills' in their executives.
Everyone seems to going through a soft skills programme. It is getting to
be a fad (pardon my saying so, but quite like what has happened to
programmes on quality).

My own view is that every organisation like an individual needs to decide
on what it wants to be, and hence what are those qualities that it would
like its people to have or portray. This calls for introspection and
reflection. Each organisation would need to define the word professional
in its context and then decide what and how it wants to develop those
qualities in its people. I dont how it can be pratically done in an
organisation, driven as it is by daily pressures of profits, market
shares, competition et al.

Bye
