Replying to Bruce Jones on TQI at his facility

Hi this is Edie with the problem of the "carve out" at her hospital. And
Bruce your idea has been thrown around but not with much success. Part of
the problem is that we work with unions and job descriptions got in the
way and there were turf issues. Things seem to go fully circle, when I
first started at this facility we as nurses did our own lab draws and gave
our own respirator treatments, we even heated up the food and passed the
trays at meal time. I really don't remember how or why we gave that up?
Nursing shortage, admin. thinking it could be done less expensive by
someone else or just trying a new system. Anyway what you proposed makes
sense in a way but also a waste of skills and expertise having nurses
doing housekeeping. I do agree that way too many people come in contact
with the patient. I would like to hear more about how you really
implemented your program and I agree that patient satisfaction is very
important but it seems these days the focus is bottom line and they are
not willing to send now to see a difference later.
