LINKAGE AND EDWARD LAWLER ANNOUNCE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT STUDY
Linkage, Inc., a leading organization development firm, is pleased to
announce an Action Research Study focused on designing and increasing the
effectiveness of performance management systems. Titled "Performance
Management: Best-in-Class Practices," the study is chaired by Human
Resources expert Dr. Edward E. Lawler III, Director of the Center for
Effective Organizations and Professor of Management and Organization at
the University of Southern California. Companies interested in
participating are encouraged to make a commitment prior to the study's
start date of January, 1999.
Performance management systems are the chief mechanism for guiding the
behavior of employees and assisting them with working to achieve
organizational goals. Despite their importance, many organizations have
inefficient or outdated systems. "Without a current, results-driven
performance management system, an organization stands to lose its
competitive edge as other best-in-class organizations take the lead," says
Professor Lawler. "One of the best ways to stay ahead is to discover best
practices and adapt them to your organization."
The study will focus on best practices that address the latest challenges,
including applying information technology to enhance efficiency,
incorporating team-based principles into the system, and utilizing the
appraisal of executives to trigger the process. Additional study
objectives include: understanding the structure of performance management
systems; maintaining flexibility in the system to address the constant
rate of change; and balancing the conflicting demands of a performance
management system's administrative purpose versus developmental use.
The key findings will be delivered to participating companies in a two-day
learning and application session. The session provides each company with
the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Lawler to understand the
research results and develop action plans. Selected best practice
companies will present their experiences and provide insights into
practical applications.
