Relevant to references on living systems, There is a two volume work by
Donald H. Ford, Humans as Self-Constructing Living Systems: developmental
perspective on behavior and personality. 1987. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence
Earlbaum Associates

Also, his son Martin Ford (co-author of the second volume) wrote a great
book about motivation. Martin E. Ford. Motivating Humans: Goals,
emotions, and peonal agency beliefs. 1992. Newbury Park, CA: Sage
Publications.

I hope this helps
