0) What if LO mail stops?
----------
I'm seeing a lot of instances in which filters intended to block unwanted
commercial e-mail are blocking legitimate LO msgs. If the LO mail stops
flowing, it's either:
- A problem at my end
- Your company or your ISP is blocking our msgs with their SPAM filters
- Your address has changed since you subscribed to the list and the old
address is no longer working.
If the mail stops, look at the web site http://www.learning-org.com to see
if there are current msgs you are not getting.
If there are new msgs on the list and you are not getting them, then write
me. The SPAM filters are getting to be a big problem. If this comes up in
your organization, make sure your computer wizzards know you are
subscribed to a mailing list that you want to receive.
If there are no new msgs, then it's a problem at my end -- just hang on,
I'll catch up in a couple of days.

2) How to spread the word
----------
Please copy the few lines in #1 above and pass them on to anyone
interested. Please do not give someone just the list address -- that's
*only* for msgs to be distributed. (When people send "subscribe" requests
to the list address, they fail and it's extra work for me. Please help me
avoid these.)
3) How to leave the list (either temporarily or permanently)
----------
The *first* step is to determine whether you are on the regular list or
the digest list. The subscriber base is kept separately, and if you send
your request for the wrong list, you'll get back "Sorry, you're not on
the list..."
To leave the learning-org list email to mailto:majordomo@world.std.com
The subject line is ignored. In the body of the message
unsubscribe learning-org
end
If you're on the digest list, then
learning-org-digest
...instead of learning-org (don't forget the hyphen before "digest"!)

5) Is there an archive? an index?

Yes, there's an archive. Complete instructions are in the info file (see
#1 above). The best way to see archived msgs is with a Web browser, and
the URL is
You can participate fully from the web, both reading and authoring msgs;
some people may prefer this instead of the usual email subscription.
Many of our messages are indexed in the search services on the web, but
these indexes sometimes lag behind and don't
show current items.
6) My Role as Host
----------
I review all msgs for relevance to the list and for tone consistent with
the learning organization principles we are trying to live. In particular,
msgs to the list must not reflect disrespect for any of the participants
here. I make minor changes for format, consistent Subject lines, etc., but
I do not change people's words.
In distributing msgs, I am NOT endorsing the content as being correct,
valid or helpful.
If a book is mentioned in a msg, I'll add a link to the book at Amazon.com;
if anyone buys the book from the link, I receive a small commission that
offsets the costs of operating learning-org.
7) Creating your own automatic "I'm away until.." msg
----------
Everyone seems to be doing this! But, if done wrong, you could create havoc
on every
mailing list to which you are subscribed! The big danger is infinite
loops, with hundreds of your automatic msgs going to every subscriber on
the list! Honest! This sounds bad, and when it happens it's really
damaging.
We're reasonably protected here on LO since I review queued msgs, but it's
a nuisance here and a grave danger on other mailing lists. So...
- If a computer-pro is setting this up for you, be sure to tell them you
are subscribed to internet mailing lists and give them a sample message
from each list.
- Write me for my notes about good design of automatic replies
- Please, DON'T TRY IT unless you know what you are doing!
- If your autoreplies go to the list address or to our msg authors, I'll
have to remove your address immediately from the LO list.
