I am responding to the question in general, not to any particular message.
I have read and re-read this thread and I've come to the conclusion that the
question is being seen as two (possibly more) questions:
1. What is the definition of a leader?
2. What are the characteristics of a good leader?
(3. How does a leader optimize the effects of leadership on the
following?)

At's note a few days ago stressed the "ship" in leadership. Leadership
may have more to do with teaching by example than leading. A person who
"contains" leadership may not be a leader. Leadership may be complicating
the issue. Shall we try "What is leading?"; "How do we lead?" or is it
such a complex issue that we will have no consensus?

Some people cannot be lead until it appears to them that they've been
taught nothing, but have discovered and agreeable methodology on their
own. Others hear a voice and begin to follow immediately, regardless of
the words it speaks.

For me, leadership is the relationship between the teacher and the
learner, regardless of which one is designated leader.
