One of the most interesting attempts at interdisciplinary learning I have
been involved in was some years ago at Penn State University. Rick
Mayhew, a painter, taught a course for senior art and engineering students
called the Art Science Interface. In it the engineers and artists learned
from each other through team work in the design of some functional, yet
interesting, and beautiful structure. The object was to be designed and
built to meet functional specifications. The physical results were
interesting. The intellectual results have stayed with me. I haven't
been in touch with any of the students to determine more, but it was a
turning point in my thinking which I try to teach in my work.
