I just wanted to share a thought on this thread...harking back to an
earlier comment I made.
It seems to me that there are a number of reasons why teams and committees
are different. It's also quite likely that a lot of "so-called" teams are
very much like committees...but not as probable that genuine teams confuse
themselves with committees. It's also possible that a few people on a
committee may "team" together for some specific purpose. I've no proof
for this statement...just intuition and experience.
A couple of reasons why they are different:
a. the level of interdependence among the members;
b. the presence (or absence) of shared purpose;
c. members' willingness to collaborate
d. leadership is more visible, and often shared in teams
e. committees tend to be managed; leadership is more centralized
f. the degree of individual identification with the group--and with the
g. different performance drivers (intrinsic and extrinsic motivators)
