Sharing Knowledge Gain from Training LO26442

Shantiru and all LOers,

There are learning technologies that can deliver application from learning
acquired in training.

One design that I use follows this approach:
        A. Seminar (uses team learning format to focus on individual
skills, challenges mental models, creates awareness of "desired" future
state)
        B. team learning (creates supporting foundation for individuals to
practice the skills learned in (A), engage in action learning as a cohort
and improve performance (return on investment) focus.
        C. Expand to intergroup teams (identify areas of interface and
linkage, expand the application of skills now learned in
        (A) and (B) through the organization.

This is a structured approach and, as such, takes time and resources for
the skillbuilding to occur at each phase. This is a "deep intervention"
learning model that is not a one-day, fifty people listening to a trainer
in the front of the room kind of experience. I've done that kind of
thing--where naively, I thought that I could provide the knowledge that
would develop better leaders through a few little exercises and
lecturettes. I no longer have that perspective. The learning has to touch
at the person's core and has to start with self-awareness and a
willingness to break down the defensive mechanisms. And that takes time.

However, Shantiru asked if there is a process and the answer is "yes."
Question is--how to make the time and resources required palatable for
those who are looking for the magic bullet. As a friend of mine who was a
Human Resources manager at one of the world's largest communications firms
relates, the engineers asked if HE could go to their 8 hour training
events and come back and review it with them in an hour meeting!

There are other elements that will affect application of training in
organizational settings and those should be explored as well.

Best,

Sandy
