Karen Peters asked for hard data on the value of a learning organization
to the bottom line. I would encourage you to look at a new book from
David H. Maister, "Practice what you preach" by The Free Press: NY, 2001.

There is also 10 years of data from Robert Kaplan and David Norton in
using The Balanced Scorecard, which places significant emphasis on
building a capable organization in its learning and growth perspective.
They argue that organizational performance is driven first by learning and
growth, which leads to improved internal processes, which leads to
customer satisfaction, which leads to financial success. They have been
researching this extensively and would be happy to provide data.
