My own experience, as organisation observer and thinker, shows that the
most difficult and challenging aspect is the
ESSENCE AND SOURCE OF THE MENTAL MODELS - individual and collective in a
team or group.
a few approaches can be used
a) Using team learning discipline, members help each other to trace the
essence and source of the prevailing mental models with respect to the
central theme or issue. Again the collective thought can still be a
stumbling block. If oneof the members is a disciplined reflector and
systems thinker, it will surely help.
b) Whatever maybe the percieved "distilled" Mental Models with respect to
the central theme or issue, get inputs and chenllenges from key
stakeholders (both internal and external or the group entity or
organisation). Pay attention to the most un-welcome critique.
c) "Engage" an outside party (a role I usually play), preferably skilled
in systems thinking to tear down the perceived mental models further.
all the above should lead to further individual and collective reflection
....
