Dear At and OL'ers,

A short, related story:

An organization that I was in a while ago had a lot of issues to "process"
and a limited number of members with which to carry them out. We struggled
long and hard to figure out how to pull this off, such that the jobs were
completed and the members doing the work were "gratified" by their efforts
and the organization became a "better" organization over time.

It was 1:00 AM one morning during a strategy session and the concept of a
"TOG" emerged. A TOG was to be a task-oriented group... essentially a self
managed group of people having the necessary skills to do the job. There
was to be a leader, but the leader was really a focal point for
communication to and from the group, making sure nothing slipped through
the cracks. Each person was a self determined contributor, guided by the
definition of the task. TOG members were assigned or volunteered, did the
job, and then moved back to their original spots within the
organization... ready, as was everyone else, to be called in when needed.
Each had their own "lives" to "live" outside the TOG. The TOG was a
special, yet to be expected, situation.

The results: gratified participants, tasks accomplished, and a most
efficient use of everyone's time. Learning occurred within the teams that
was then of benefit to the rest of the organization. The "leader" carried
the report of process back to the larger group (organizational memory). It
worked... "...routinely... continuously... persistently... proactively".
