Pardon me for picking a few words out of your message for comment, but I
can empathize with what you said.

I'm wondering what you and others think about these conditions -- how they
arise, are sustained, etc.

I sometimes think that if the roles were reversed, I might not do much
better myself. I hope so, but what if not? What if these self-serving
people really don't want to be that way themselves? Sometimes they don't
realize it. Sometimes they are trapped.

I've seen a lot of small organizations -- say consultants -- recreate what
they espouse to dissolve. It's scary. Maybe it's like gravity -- we aim
high, but there are downward forces that can't be discounted.

I can't excuse self-service, cynicism, hypocrisy -- but how do we avoid
it? Maybe recognizing sustaining structures. Maybe recognizing when we
start down the path to destructiveness, rather than recognizing it once
we're immersed in it.

Take care,

John
