>Would anyone in the group care to discuss PUNISHED BY REWARDS

By way of a brief introduction I am superintendent of schools in
Montgomery County, NC (near Charlotte) and have followed this list off and
on for the last two years. It is interesting that Alfie Kohn's work,
PUNISHED BY REWARDS would come up. I think it is most appropriate to
discuss in a forum that seeks to acknowledge the impact of systems and,
hopefully, to apply systems thinking in our development of learning
organizations. Kohn's designation of our reward systems as "pop
behaviorism" is challenging to our traditions and our way of thinking. If
setting rewards in order to motivate students to read or people to work
for a goal is contradictory to our intended outcomes, what does that leave
us? The prospect of developing systems that are aware of this dialogue
and of incorporating systems that are people sensitive is intergal to a
systems approach from my perspective.
