I'm new on the list and want to say a few words by way of introduction.
The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook came into my hands by way of my wife, a
teacher involved in school reform, who said that her principal needed to
read it but didn't "get it," and she thought I might get more out of it.
She was right. I'm involved in Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS),
one of the several groups that parted company with Alcoholics Anonymous in
the past few decades over the issue of AA's religious orientation. I do
the unofficial website for SOS (www.unhooked.com) and had a hand in
writing our de facto organizational manual last year. Like the person who
was thrilled to discover he had been talking prose, I was thrilled on
reading the FB that our organization had been a LO all along without
knowing it ... all except for one rather persistent Shifting the Burden
problem. Senge's work resonates nicely with many of us who have come out
of a substance addiction. I'm skeptical how many major corporations will
actually achieve the transition to something resembling a LO, but Senge's
ideas certainly strike fertile ground in this small nonprofit. For those
interested in how LO theory looks from one man's secular recovery
perspective, I just posted a longish review of the two 5D books on
unhooked.com. The url is
