Here are the ones I did not incorporate in my original message - and they
too do have some wider application than with one's kids, I think.

2. make sure your teen knows that while grades are vitally important, your
child is more important to you than his grades.

4. make sure there is nothing blocking your teen from learning (such as
learning disorders, drugs or alcohol)

5. know the names and philosophies of the principal, assistant principals,
guidance counselors, and all teachers.

6. if discussions on grades has become a battleground at certain times,
declare that time off-limits unless the teen brings up.

7. once you have done all these, put your teen in charge of school - make
them responsible for their performance
