People swim in a river of problems. As an operational definition of a
problem i use: a problem is the difference between (internal) expectations
and the perceived (external) reality. Most of the time when there is a
negative sign, we add a negative feeling to it - or it is induced, that is
expressed as a(n) emotion(s).

When it is positive, we generally do not add a negative feeling and don't
call it a problem. A problem creates tension. Tension has to be released
and it therefor drives us to "solve" a problem. We cannot live with
problems. Without problems, we wouldn't move, so we cannot live without
problems.
Two main solutions: change reality ("to be") or change expectations ("not
to be"). So THE problem is "to be or not to be".
There are two main types of problems: closed (having a "best" solution)
and open (having an "open" solution). The first are solved routinely, they
are "how" and "what" type of problems; the second type we try to transform
into type one. Some open problems resist this, because they derive from a
paradox: they are self referential, recursive and contra dictionary. These
problems have to do with "why" and "who". "Who am i?" and "Why am i
here?".
I do not know what "THE" is problem. Knowing people, i assume that if we
knew, we would have solved it by now. So "what is THE problem?" is not the
problem. Try "Who is THE problem" or "Why is THE problem?".
