You asked for a definition here is one. It is longer than you requested
and it is about what leaders do not what it is but I am offering it
anyway.

Leadership is easier to understand by looking at its two parts -- the
process and the methods.
The leadership process includes these elements: provide purpose, align the
troops and actions with that purpose, encourage development the required
skills, provide a structure and resources that fit the task, combine
feeling with reason to provide feedback and set realistic worthy goals.
All leaders use the same steps the difference between evil and virtuous
leaders is the methods used within each step. Gang leaders use different
methods than a President. Gandhi used different methods than Hitler.
Meeting leaders use different methods than a COO.
All steps must be completed to establish unified action.
