You may want to look into research in Industrial/Organizational Psychology
and Organizational Behavior. There is a well established research base in
both fields that indeed suggests that money is not the key motivation for
employees. Actually, it tends to rank around 7th place behind such
factors as freedom in decision making, challenging work and recognition.
If you have easy access to a public library you will find a wealth of
research on this topic through Psychlit. Also, check out the book 7
Survival Skills for a Reengineered World by William N. Yeomans. There are
many others dealing with this topic, I just happen to be re-reading this
one this week.
